1 John 1:9 - A faithful God

'If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.'

When my sons were little lads I used to expect them to say sorry if they had done something naughty.  Sometimes I would get a sorry that didnt sound at all sorry to me. Then I would ask,  and what does sorry mean? The answer I wanted was that they would try not to do it again. The point was, just saying sorry wasnt enough. They had to have thought about what they had done. I expected them to acknowledge that what they had done was wrong and to understand enough about why it was wrong to have a good chance of avoiding the behaviour again.

Last week we thought about confession. We start by admitting to ourselves that something we are doing is not right.  Most of us have done this when we started coming to N.I.M.O.S. The next step may be to confess to others, and there is an opportunity to do that as we share with our friends here. But ultimately if we really want to make changes in our behaviour we need to confess to God.

The verse holds a promise that God will be faithful and just. There will never be a time when He does not keep this promise and His justice is such that if you really confess, and mean what you are saying from the heart, He will forgive you. As I believe it is a sin not to take care of the wonderful bodies God has given us then eating unhealthy food is a sin and separates us from God. His forgiveness means the sins are washed away and we are purified. Then we are in a right place to go on with God. We become His righteous people. We are told that He hears the prayers of the righteous. How great is that! We can pray for help to change our ways and hopefully become healthier.  Then as we are blessed we can bless others by praying for them.
