1 Corinthians 10:13 - Temptation

'No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.'

Recently a friend came to Geoff and I and asked if he could share something with us. He wanted help to break a habit he new was displeasing to God. He hoped that being accountable to us would help him. Obviously we said that we would pray with him and for him and we have continued to do that. After about a week we both felt that we should give him a verse to memorise and to use when he was tempted. Reciting scripture can be a strong weapon against the devil.

It occurred to me that I was in a similar situation. I have asked Kath and Judith if I can be accountable to them. This week I thought it would be good to learn a verse that I could use when I was tempted to eat stuff I know full well I shouldnt be eating. This is the verse that came into my mind.

What a relief that the temptations that try to grab us are common to man. As we talk in Nimos this becomes apparent. Im not the only one who has food that screams out, eat me, eat me. And how great that God is faithful. He will keep his promise not to tempt us beyond what we can bear. The key follows. We are told that when we are tempted (note not if) God will also provide a way out.  I gave this some considerable thought. I have been praying that God would show me the way out that he is providing. In his mercy he provides lots of things that contribute to the way out. There are lots of low fat and low sugar products on the market today. At Nimos all the recipes we try are low in fat and sugar content. We have friends at Nimos to be accountable to. We have verses like this one that we can learn and repeat to ourselves to confound the devil. We have the privilege of prayer and the strength of Christ to help us. Lets make an extra big effort this week to stand up under it.
